Obituary

Elenora Smith was born on July 22, 1930 to Thomas and Marie Elizabeth Davis. She passed away on April 3, 2020 in White Plains, New York.

After graduating from high school she earned an Associate's Degree and embarked on a long career as a licensed practical nurse.

Elenora and George R. Smith were married on July 23, 1950 in a lavish wedding at her home which was covered by the local newspaper. From this union Raymond Leon Smith was born on April 22, 1955.

Elenora grew up during a lively era of entrepreneurship, self-determination, culture, classic jazz music and community activism which influenced her throughout her life. She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church of White Plains, New York for sixty-nine years, a member of the Sunday School, the Gospel Chorus, and an original member of the Chancel Choir. Travel was one of her passions; using her strong leadership and organizational skills, she planned trips for large groups of people to destinations all over the world. As a member of the Theodore D. Young Community Center, she coordinated the Fairview Greenburgh Center Bridge Club, was instrumental in organizing the Theater Club, volunteered in many capacities and was a strong presence. She supported the continuous improvement of her community through participation with Parkway Gardens and Homes. In 2017 she was inducted into the Westchester County Senior Hall of Fame for her contributions towards improving life for seniors in the County.

She conducted herself with great self-assurance and confidence in her actions and the many opinions she held. With good intentions, she readily shared those opinions with everyone she knew. She was active, spirited and strong. She leaves a lasting impression on her many friends and relatives, all of whom are saddened by her death and will greatly miss her.

She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband, George, in 1978, and her beloved son, Raymond in 2012.

Left to mourn (but also to smile) when remembering her unique qualities and her take charge nature are her many, many friends and relatives including her cousins, Marcie Brown, Carrie Cheek, David Cheek, Mildred Champion, Paulette Coleman, Linda Cheek-Richards, Darryn Cheek, Della Burgess, Debra Belle, Monica Morgan, Douglas Coleman, Martin Richards, Gregory Smoot, and Jeffrey Brown.

What a pleasure to have met and known Elinora.
She loved to go out to restaurants, theatres, etc. She was an amazingly independent and caring person.
I recall meeting her not so long ago to go to dinner and she insisted on driving in her own car! That it made her feel safer!
I already miss her and her wisdom.
To her family and friends, I extend my sincere condolences, with peace and love.

To the Family and Friends of Eleanor,
Let me offer my deepest condolences at this most difficult time of grief. It’s hard to imagine a world without Eleanor.
Part of me wants to phone her as I have countless times over the years. Memories do help. We had many adventures together. My life was made better with her presence. It’s a friendship which started in 1994. She was one of my “seniors” at the Theodore D. Young Community Center. She was always take charge and hands on. While some offered suggestions, she did the work. The work had impact for many people in the senior citizen program. More importantly her efforts went far beyond helping activities happen, she provided an example for making a difference. She was advocate, ambassador, and steward for the TDY Center. Though the years our friendship evolved. We both became seniors.
Eleanor’s determination was remarkable. She endured the loss of her husband and son with much dignity and grace.
In her 80’s left her house of 60 years to start again in a co-op. Always practical and independent she remained engaged with life… doing things and being with people.
In a last conversation just days before her passing, she planned to again drive her car. She often said to me, “Don’t get old”
As I think about it. She never did. Not in spirit.
God Bless you Eleanor.
You will be vastly missed,
You were family.

Condolence to the family we will truly miss Elenora. I Karen worked several years with her as election inspectors for the town of Greenburgh and she was of course the lead person who showed me what to do lol. My husband and I are Deacon and Deaconess of Bethel Baptist Church and would go serve her communion at her home when she no longer could attend services. Through her health issues Elenora never turned away from her faith and would thank God for what he has done and continued to do in her life. Rest my friend you've kept the faith. 💘 Deacon Richard and Deaconess Karen Jackson and family.💘

This is long over due. I miss her something terrible. I miss calling her to just catch up on how she was feeling. It simple just have girl talk. Being with her in the hospital was very humbling to me when her health started to decline because she was the mountain that I thought could not be cut down. Her creator knew that her living with declining health was not the women he knew, so he called her home be be that mountain strength, maybe my friend and her son Ray needed her up there with him. I miss you Ms. Elenora
