Barbara Elaine Thompson of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away at home on Sunday, January 4th, 2015. She was 79 years old and was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies to Sarah and Theophilus Roberts. She grew up in St. Andrew, Jamaica and was always a member of the local Methodist Church in whatever city that she was living in. She was the youngest of 4 children and she had 3 brothers George, Herve, and Milton. Unfortunately all her brothers have preceded her. As a young woman Barbara attended and graduated from Kingston Technical High School where she studied stenography, short hand and typing. Once she graduated from High school she landed a job with the Jamaica Ministry of Health as a secretary. After several years at the Ministry of Health she got a job at the Jamaica Supreme Court where she worked as Administrative Secretary. Barbara was always extremely industrious and soon decided that she wanted more out of her life. So she decided that the best opportunities for a better life would be to migrate to the United States. Within a couple of years she relocated to the Mt. Vernon, New York and began working for the Murray, Schoen & Homer Insurance Company as an Insurance Claims Specialist. She later enhanced her career by enrolling in B.O.C.E.S. night school. In order to support and provide for her family Barbara would sometimes take on additional jobs to make ends meet. In fact she loved Avon products, sold Avon for years, and even worked at Gimbles, and Macys part-time. After retiring from Murray, Schoen & Homer Barbara obtained a job as an Administrative Secretary with the Westchester County Department of Health and relocated her family to White Plains, New York. In addition she decided to go back to school to obtain a degree in Data Processing. To accomplish this she enrolled at the Westchester Community College and graduated with an Associate in Applied Science Degree with a Major in Data Processing. She also took several courses at SUNY Purchase. For Barbara the sky was always the limit and she always reached for it. Barbara retired from the Westchester Department of Health in 2005 and relocated to Grayson, Georgia. Throughout her life Barbara was always God fearing and religious, she was hard working, very frugal and enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a quiet woman with taste, character and was blessed with superior inner strength. She was a "True Jamaican".
Barbara loved using quotes especially to her children and grandchildren, some of her favorite quotes were:
“Party on Saturday but church on Sunday”
"There is a time and place for everything"
“Life is not a bed of roses.”
“There is a place for everything and everything in its place”
"A whistling woman and a crowing hen is an abomination to the Lord"
Barbara is survived by her 3 children, daughters: Michelle of White Plains, New York, Marge of Miami, Florida, and son: Marlon of Stone Mountain, Georgia and granddaughters Brittany, Tanisha, Tiffany, Ashlee, and Jacara.
