Walter Leonard Ford departed this life on May 8, 2013. He was born in Bronx, New York on 163rd Street to the late Leon Ignacius Ford and Evelyn Rebecca Greene on March 18, 1929 and was the fourth of six children. Walter served in the Army from February 1951 to February 1953. He met his lovely bride Sallie B. Johnson while on leave and married on February 3, 1952 just before shipping out to fight in the Korean War. From that union four children were born and the couple settled in White Plains, NY.
Walter worked as a Foreman for Kanter’s Carpet Service in White Plains (a family owned business). He worked at Kanter’s for many years before he went out on his own for approximately five years. After closing his doors he went to work for the County of Westchester until he retired.
Walter was a very hard worker, a strong family supporter and a loyal friend. He was best known for his stern manner and “no-nonsense” attitude but was always there if you needed him. He was a well known community activist and served on several local task forces, committees and executive boards throughout his life.
He leaves to cherish his memory four loving children – Pamela Dillard (Edward) of Poughkeepsie, NY; Leonard Ford (Deborah), of Powder Springs, GA; Lawrence “Kahleem” Ford (Naiyma) of White Plains; Carrie “Sandra” McKenzie (Carl) of Medway, MA; eight grandchildren, Ni-ma Ford, Denard Ford, Courtney McKenzie, Haqqiqah Ford, Christian Ford, Camaryn McKenzie, Barbara Dillard and Passion Jones; one brother Vannoy Thomas (Marlene) of Pensacola, FL; one sister Jackie Nelson of Bronx, NY and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife Sallie B. Ford, two brothers Edward Thomas and Bernard Ford, and one sister Moscelyn Thomas.
