Robert H. "Erland" Thorpe was born to the late Erla Thorpe and Fitzgerald Thorpe on October 11, 1938 in Barbados , West Indies. He was the fourth of six children. He departed this life on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at his home in Greenburgh, NY surrounded by his family.
Robert was married to Vernese Thorpe. He was father of three - Peter Thorpe, and from his marriage Alicia "Julie" and Ryan Thorpe. He was grandfather of two, Eowyn and Sybilla Thorpe. Robert was a loving, helpful and giving person who reached out to anyone in need.
He was educated in Barbados, West Indies. He immigrated to White Plains, NY in 1979 to join his mother, sister, and brothers. He was employed at the New York School for the Deaf until he retired back to Barbados in 2002. While he lived in New York he attended Mt. Hope AME Zion Church and even when he return to New York for visits. He joined St. Helen's Missionary Church, in St. George, Barbados, where he was a Baptized member.
Robert leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Vernese; daughter, Alicia "Julie"; 2 sons, Peter and Ryan of White Plains, NY; 2 granddaughters, Eowyn of Manchester CT, and Sybilla of White Plains, NY; 4 sisters, Joyce of the U.K., Iva of White Plains, NY, Liz of Barbados, and Merlene of Brooklyn, NY; 6 brothers , Selvin of Trinidad, Hallam, Errol, and Glyne of Barbados, Mark and David of Brooklyn, NY; 1 uncle, Grafton "Tommy" of White Plains, NY; 2 Aunts, Mary of White Plains, NY and Elaine of Barbados; nieces, Wavyne "Diana", Allison, SoMauri, and many others; nephews, Maurice, Tony, Donville, Antoin, and many others; numerous loving cousins, Thorpes, Gaskins, Holdips, Deanes, Smiths, and Smalls; in-laws, Callenders, Ellis; friends, the Boyces of Brooklyn, NY, June of Pennsylvania, and a host of other relatives and friends.
