Obituary for R. Maurice "Mo" Hadley

RICHARD MAURICE “MO” HADLEY

Maurice was born Nov. 16, 1956, at the 42nd Field Hospital in Verdun, France to James & Loretta Hadley where he lived the first three years of his life. From there he continued his life journey residing in Greenburgh, NY where he was affectionately known as “Mo” aka “Ears.” During his childhood he was a member of various groups: boy scouts, pee wee football, drum & bugle corps, and played high school football. Maurice attended Greenburgh Central 7 school district and graduated from Woodlands High School in 1975.

After high school Maurice attended Denver Auto Mechanic School in Denver, CO. There he learned to restore and paint his own vehicles and loved everything Mopar. Once returning home he held several jobs: Auto mechanic, assistant dean, and food service, where he worked alongside with his father at Ruth Taylor Institute in Valhalla, NY.

Maurice later became a corrections officer for Westchester County Correctional Facility, where he retired after 25 years of service with the County of Westchester. During this time, he was also a party promoter belonging to a group known as “The Brother’s Four”. For several years “The Brother’s Four” successfully gave events all throughout Westchester County and NYC.

In 1978 Maurice joined the U.S. Armed Forces where he was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC HHB- Artillery Div. for SCOM - FIC as infantry soldier 11 Bravo, also, 82nd Airborne Special Forces. During his time of service, he was also a member of a male chorus. He received several commendations for telecommunication, paratrooper, sharpshooter, marksmanship along with various other badges, awards, and training.

He went on to join in 1983 the National Guards. He was an E-5 platoon sergeant of 101st signal platoon of the 230 B- company in Yonkers, NY. Sgt. Hadley received a letter of appreciation from NY State Executive Chambers from Governor Pataki on November 26, 2001 for protecting and serving the City of New York during the 9/11 attack of the World Trade Center.

After Maurice’s retirement from corrections & the military, he moved to the Atlanta Metro Area. Mo made lots of friends living in Georgia. You could always count on him for his help, and his door was always open to all. He was a huge New York Giants Fan; he loved the game so much that he hosted Sunday Football parties and the doors of his home opened at noon. Mo also continued to do what he loved by promoting a good time through the experience of food. For 15 years Mo hosted a local annual event known as the “Meat Feast” in Georgia. This was his pride and joy to see this event grow over the years from the house to the club. Nothing made him happier than to say, “Welcome to Mo’s”.

The essence of Maurice was like no other. He connected with so many people throughout his life making every individual feel special in their own light. Maurice was a loving doting son, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He fathered a village of children as well as his own two, including his grandchildren. He loved his family very dearly.

Maurice is survived by his mother, Loretta Hadley of GA; daughter, Diana Hadley-Patillo of VA; sister Verdell Mason of GA; brothers Horace Hadley of AZ, Chris Sabin of NJ, James Jenkins of FL; and life partner Assunta Wesby of GA. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, a host of nieces & nephews, family members and friends.

Maurice was predeceased by his father, James Hadley; his son, Dwonn Maurice Hadley; and his two brothers, Dennis & James Hadley.
