Obituary for Dorothy "Dottie" Holloway (Dodson)

Dorothy Dodson Holloway

Dorothy D. Holloway passed away peacefully in her home in Chicago on October 7, 2022. She was a resident of Greenburgh, New York for over 50 years.

Dorothy “Dottie” Dodson was born November 10, 1937 to Van Buren Dodson and Ida Scott Cooper Dodson in Anniston, Alabama. She was raised on Morningside Avenue in Harlem and was a graduate of the High School of Music and Art and of New York University where she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She completed additional graduate work at Teacher’s College of Columbia University.

Dorothy began her career in education in the New York City Public Schools, then taught in Laon, France and Arvada, Colorado before moving back to New York. She started her work in the White Plains Public Schools as an elementary school teacher at the Battle Hill School, then soon became a guidance counselor at White Plains High School, a job she truly loved. She served the White Plains Public Schools for forty years and often commented that she had been on every committee that ever existed at WPHS. The PTA Jenkins Award and the Dr. Barry Yearwood Award were among the fitting tributes to her varied service.

Dorothy was active in community life in White Plains. She served on the Boards of both the YWCA and the Neuberger Museum. She was appointed to County Executive Alfred DelBello's Women's Council and was a Brownie troop leader. She was honored to be a recipient of The City of White Plains Human Rights Commission Award.

As much as Dorothy loved being an educator, she loved her family even more. Her only child, Vicki, was her pride and joy. In retirement, Dorothy continued to enjoy art exhibits, reading, movies, theater, dance performances, and concerts from jazz to classical. She made frequent trips to Chicago to visit Vicki and her son-in-law Valdir, and especially to spend time with her beloved grandchildren, Gabrielle and Bryson. She moved to Chicago to be closer to her family in 2020.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Archie Holloway; her parents, Van Buren and Ida Dodson; her brother, Robert Dodson; and her sister, Helen Enquist. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Victoria and Valdir Barbosa; her grandchildren Gabrielle and Bryson Barbosa; her niece Deborah Moore and her husband Derrick Moore; her grand-nephews Steven Cosby-Moore, Derrick Moore Jr., and DeAnthony Moore; her grand-niece Ashley Duncan; and her great-grand nephews Kayden Duncan-Ford and Alijah Duncan.

The Scottish poet Thomas Campbell wrote, "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."

A wake will be held on Tuesday October 25th, 2022 at 11AM, and the funeral will take place at 12PM, all at Bethel Baptist Church, 1 Fisher Ct., White Plains. Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery and will be followed by a repast. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society with gratitude from her family.
