Obituary for Joseph P. Pendleton

Joseph Preston Pendleton was born on October 16, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Elizabeth Mary Pendleton. After birth, he moved to Tappahannock, Virginia to live. He attended public schools and graduated from Essex County High School in 1955. After high school, Joseph moved to White Plains, New York to work. Shortly, thereafter, in 1958, Joseph joined the military, enlisting in the United States Air Force. While in the military, he traveled to Spain and Turkey, among other countries. He served 6 years in the military being honorably discharged in 1964. After his military service, Joseph found work at IBM where he would meet the love of his life, Carolyn Irene Jeter. He and Carolyn wed on October 4, 1969. From their union, they were blessed with two children, Brian Pendleton born in 1972 and Kimberly Pendleton born in 1975.

Joseph was a devoted husband and family man. He enjoyed playing catch with his son, and going to his daughter’s dance recitals. He often played board games, cards, including his favorite games Gin Rummy and Pinochle, and he enjoyed watching movies with the family. He vacationed with his family all across the United States and Canada, traveling to Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, California, Arizona, Nevada, Montreal and Toronto among other destinations. He was a quiet, thoughtful, and generous man to his family and friends.

His hobbies included bowling, attending baseball, basketball, and football games, and watching his favorite teams, the New York Mets, the New York Knicks, and the New York Jets. He regularly participated in annual bowling leagues. He loved listening to black soul music including James Brown and The Temptations.

Joseph worked as a telecommunication specialist at various IBM locations, in White Plains, Elmsford, Tarrytown, and eventually in Somers, New York. He was active in his church, Bethel Baptist Church for over 50 years, often volunteering by serving food during church functions. God was a big part of his life and he was a proud Christian. He was a loving husband to Carolyn, supporting her as she worked and pursued her Bachelor’s Degree by attending college at night.

Joseph eventually retired from IBM after working for over 25 years. He continued to work as a contractor for IBM after retirement and helped his wife Carolyn run her own daycare company called “Auntie’s Home”. He continued to travel and enjoy many adventures with Carolyn to many destinations including San Diego, California, Alaska, Chicago, Illinois, and Spain.

Joseph went home to be with the Lord on September 30th, 2022. He was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth, his wife Carolyn, brother-in law Tommie Jeter, and mother-in law Ernestine Foster.
