Obituary for Dr. Roland Julius Henderson

Dr. Roland Julius Henderson first opened his eyes to the world on November 6,1941 in Chattanooga, TN. He was the youngest of three sons born to the union of William and Alice Henderson who preceded him in death. Roland had a close bond with his brothers, Robert and Howard Henderson who both also preceded him in death. All of Chattanooga, TN.

Roland attended Chattanooga Public Schools, graduating from Howard High School then matriculating to Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Psychology/Education at the City College of New York, Graduate Division and a Doctorate in Psychology/Education from Walden University.

In 1965, Roland married Irene Simms. The next year, he was drafted by the Army and served for two years until he was honorably discharged. In 1969, since they had not had a honeymoon, the Hendersons made their first international trip. During their 56 years together, they travelled all over the world. One of Roland’s favorite places to visit was Paris, France which they returned to at least six times.

Roland spent most of his professional career as a school psychologist. In 1985, Roland and Irene purchased an independent ambulatory senior home, Ridgeview Guest Home for Adults in White Plains, NY, which they owned and operated for 11 years.

After his retirement, Roland volunteered at New York Botanical Gardens and Pace University (Arts & Crafts for children). His hobbies, reading, chess, listening to jazz and classical music, visiting museums all over the world, trying his hand at painting, and travel consumed a lot of his time.

For 56 years, Roland was a member of Riverside Church of New York City, a non-denominational community of faith, where he attended faithfully with his wife Irene. Roland enjoyed New York’s cultural environment where the opera, stage plays and musicals were only a subway ride or car drive away for he and Irene. For years they lived in New York State, nine in Queens, 16 in Kent, and 30 in White Plains, where they lived at the time of Roland’s death.

Roland peacefully departed this life on January 18,2022.

Roland leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Irene of White Plains, NY; brother-in-law Clarence Simms (Suzanne) of Daytona Beach, FL and a host of dear relatives, beloved friends and treasured associates.
