In Loving Memory of James R. Hadley
March 9th, 1928, - January 8th, 2022
James Richard Hadley of Peekskill, NY was born on March 9, 1928 in Lakeland, Florida. He was the youngest of six children born to Charlie and Essie Mae Smith Hadley. James was called Home on Saturday January 8, 2022, at the Emerald Peek Rehab and Nursing Facility in Peekskill.
James was raised by his Aunt Mary J. Wilson from infancy through his teens as a result of the untimely passing of his parents. He received his early education in the Lakeland Public schools and vocational training from The Lakeland Cooking and Baking School. He briefly relocated to Philadelphia, PA and resided in White Plains, NY for many years before moving to Peekskill.
At the age of 21, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War. He was stationed in Verdun France and was a cook throughout his tenure in the service. He met and married his wife Loretta Haywood Hadley during this time and from that union had four children.
Upon returning from the military, James opened his own family restaurant- HADLEY’S in White Plains. James also worked at WP Hospital and the Westchester Airport. He was head chef at the employee cafeteria at the Ruth Taylor Institute at Westchester County Medical Center. James retired from the County and the Veterans Hospital in Montrose, New York.
James was a God fearing man and openly professed his faith. He had a joyful sense of humor and greeted everyone with a smile. He loved family and rejoiced in just being together at all family gatherings. Mr. Hadley was widely recognized for always being well groomed and sharply dressed and was an honored customer with a Platinum Card from Habands. His greatest Passion was sharing his special gift of cooking and seeing the joy on people’s faces when he cooked for them, knowing they tasted all the love he put into it.
He truly enjoyed deep sea fishing and was highly skilled and knowledgeable about all types of fish. He traveled to other states to fish and shared his catch with friends and family. He also enjoyed gardening and was a big fan of wrestling, football and doing Jigsaw puzzles.
James was predeceased in death by his late sons, Dennis Hadley, James Hadley and grandson Dewonn Hadley.
James leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children: James Jenkins of FL, Verdell Mason and Maurice Hadley of GA, Horace Hadley of AZ, and Chris Sabin of New Jersey; eleven Grandchildren and twenty Great Grandchildren, and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Family and Friends.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR THE TIME AND LOVE HE SHARED WITH US!!
MAY HE CONTINUE TO SLEEP IN PEACE!!
