Obituary for Siriratr "Sue" McDermott

Siriratr was born on December 4th 1937 in Bangkok, Thailand as the third of four children. The family was in the motion picture theatre business. She and her childhood girlfriends would go and watch the movies after school. She often said she enjoyed watching and drawing the clouds and sky in the countryside where the family was evacuated during late WWII.

She graduated from Mater Dei in Bangkok Thailand.

Our family joke is “Her father sent her to America to keep her away from the Americans GI’s”. But in reality the family sent the children out of the country for education. She went to Washington D.C. to attend Strayer College for secretarial training and interned for People’s Life Insurance company.

She met her husband at a party three months before she was to return home to Thailand. Upon returning home she worked at the Erawan Hotel in downtown Bangkok as a secretary support for the foreign guests. Meanwhile the couple maintained contact via airmail letter sheets and overseas telephone calls. Her future husband worked for the Long Line Department of AT&T in Washington D.C. After about a year and a half she returned to the States to join the love her life. She married T.P. McDermott on November 27th 1966 in Tamaqua, PA which was her husband’s hometown.

The couple honeymooned in Greenwich Village, NYC. Fortunately, her husband was on a temporary work assignment, so they were able to stay for three months where she learned to enjoy eating pizza with pepperoni.

They lived in Georgetown, Washington DC for four years where she wore out two baby strollers pushing her daughter Colleen over brick sidewalks while enjoying the city life sights.

Upon a work opportunity the family settled in White Plains, NY in late 1970. Her daughter Colleen attended Good Council nearby. She started working at County Trust Bank in evening hours and later at Bank of New York in Harrison.

Every year she would return home to spend time with her family in Thailand and often brought her daughter with her.

Sue had easy access to walking downtown White Plains especially Macy’s where she loved the cosmetic and jewelry departments, Bloomingdale’s restaurant and the restaurants in the area.

In her later years she enjoyed spending time with her family and granddaughter. She loved shopping, slot machines, eating at Thai restaurants and watching old time movies. She also loved the dogs in her life over the many years, Chico, Sandy, Sam, Lucky, Penny, Jackpot and most recently Bonus or “Bunny” as she would affectionately call her.

She strongly and courageously survived a hip replacement and COVID in April and survived to return home to her granddaughter Alyssa, daughter Colleen and husband T.P. in May in time for Mother’s Day.

She went back to the hospital in the middle of July due to issues with breathing and the heart. But she overcame and returned home again under at home hospice care. She spent her last 6 months at home with family and pets in good spirits despite being homebound. She enjoyed lots of Thai takeout, her favorite home cooked meals (lots of quesadillas and pan fried dumplings!) and spending time with her family. She passed away at home unexpectedly on January 13th 2021 at 6:12 pm beside her family. Her passing was seemingly quick and painless with her family looking over her.

She watches over us now and her kindness and spirit has forever touched the people and family she left with her legacy living on.
