Obituary for Jean Jones Jordan (Jones)

Jean Jones Jordan, a long-term resident of Scarsdale, New York, passed away on January 8, 2021. Jean possessed a beautiful spirit and was widely celebrated for her effusive kindness, optimism, and joie de vivre. A native of Smithfield, Virginia, Jean received her undergraduate degree at Norfolk State University, where her beauty and affable nature led to her election as Homecoming Queen. After graduation, Jean moved to New York, where she earned master's degrees in Urban Affairs at Hunter College and in Education Supervision and Administration at Fordham University.

In Manhattan, the former "country girl" eagerly immersed herself in the city's new and vibrant experiences. In the process, Jean met a coterie of lifelong friends, as well as her beloved husband of twenty-six years, Dr. Alphonzo Jordan. Dr. Jordan was a pioneering physician and had the honor of being one of the first cardiologists in the United States to perform percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTCA), following firsthand instruction from Dr. Andreas Gruentzig, inventor of the procedure. Jean worked for the NYC Board of Education for nearly four decades, first as a teacher, later as an education evaluator, and finally, as a school district administrator. After retirement, the depth of Jean's expertise kept her in demand as a consultant for CUNY's graduate teaching program.

Jean's retirement years, mostly spent in Sarasota, Florida, were replete with the joy and rich social interactions that characterized so much of her life. In Sarasota, Jean welcomed numerous friends to her famed annual New Year's Day celebration, which she hosted with her characteristic warmth and boundless energy. Jean traveled often and enthusiastically participated in multiple social clubs, including The Hillbillies, The Northeasterners, The Carrousels, and the Sophisticates, where she served as national president.

Jean's grace, unpretentiousness, and effortless charm made her a pleasure to be around and endeared her to many. She was one of a kind, and countless friends and family mourn her loss.

Jean has rejoined her husband, Dr. Alphonzo Jordan, at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Jordan; her son, Brett Jordan; and many loving relatives and dear friends.
