Obituary for Hilda Editha Gill (Hinkson)

EULOGY
Hilda Editha Hinkson-Gill was born in Barbados West Indies on June 6th 1932 to Iris Hinkson and Samuel Lewis. She made her transition on April 13th 2020.

She lived in Hillwick Village St Joseph all her youth and young adult life: there she raised her children. Then she move to Mile Lords Hill St Micheal after her marriage to Uriel Gill. In 1968 she migrated to USA residing in Scarsdale with the late Dr. and Mrs. Clement as an Au Pair for their children. Her love for her own children made her a perfect match for them. Later she moved to Greenburgh and finally to Primrose Street in White Plains.

Hilda was very ambitious and wanted more, so she attended classes to become an Nursing Assistant and got a job working at Tibbits Nursing Home and White Plains Hospital. Enabling her husband and children to join her in the USA, she worked at the hospital in Central Supply until she retired in 2000. She worked very hard but she still had time for her church, she loved the Lord and Savior, read her Bible daily and never stop praying. She encouraged her children their spouses and grandchildren to do the same.

Hilda was a christian and never was afraid to let anyone know of her faith. She was a member of Shiloh Gospel Chapel in White Plains until her retirement, then she moved to Orlando, Florida to be in the sunshine once more. There she found another Gospel Chapel, and was a member until---Alzheimer's—engulfed her life and she moved back to White Plains, residing with my sister Yvonne at Lake Street ,White Plains.

She lived an independent and vibrant life in Florida with my sister Ena looking on. Our visits from up North was welcome, she would cook and drive us around to some of Orlando sites. But as her independence and memory was slipping away. Names was hard to recall, we became the one name she held on to Yvonne. But face recognition remained.

Hilda love to cook and bake; her “mac and cheese” was the favorite among the grandchildren, non other could compare. Her carrot and zucchini bread and black cake at Xmas, still stimulate the palette as we speak . And she never wrote a recipe down.
Her generosity extended to her church and many charities, both local and overseas. During the holidays there were care packages for each child and their families, the Hospital staff in her dept, and her neighbors. Later years I added my colleagues to the list as my slice of cake could serve only one other person .

She love to dress and love her hats, even in Barbados: my brother Michael would wait until she was ready to leave for church, and mess with her hat , she shoo him off, look in the mirror, reposition her hat and be on her way.
Hilda was a disciplarian, she believed in not "sparing the rod and spoiling the child" Boy, Oh Boy! my siblings and I chose to forget those times, except for the last two who didn’t experience much (at least that what we older ones think) .

We are thankful for her long life, her great example as a mother, a believer in Jesus Christ, her work ethics and most of all for her love to us and her grandchildren, great grandchildren.
Hilda is survived by her sister Vivian Hinkson and Cecil Hinkson in Barbados; six children: Claudette Holdipp, Yvonne Hinkson, Ena Jackman, Michael Hinkson (Hetty Hinkson), Marcelle Hinkson-Drummond, Roslyn Gill-Hill,(Gray Hill); Grandchildren: Glenroy Jackman (Regina Jackman), Michael Hinkson Jr, Terrell Holdipp, Lamar Hinkson (Stephanie Hinkson), Taurean Drummond, Monique Jackman, Tonji Holdipp, Rashana Hinkson, Kenneth Holdipp, Dominque Hinkson, Sherese Hill, Alyse Hill and Anthony Hill. Her husband Uriel Gill ,and 14 great grandchildren.
And a host of nieces and nephews in Barbabos, Maryland, England, North Carolina, Indiana, and Plenty of wonderful friends both in the USA and Barbados and her church family. She lived a full life, her commitment to family, her faith, and hard work will be her legacy.
Rest in peace Mom.
