Obituary for Dorothy Lester
Celebration of Life
Sister Dorothy Virginia Lester was born July 21, 1930 in Eutawville, SC to the late Anna Bell and Benjamin Davis. She was educated in the White Plains Public School System. In 1955 Dorothy Virginia Davis was married in holy matrimony to the late Walter Lester, Jr. From this union they were blessed with four children. She found great joy in being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Dorothy worked at R.H. Macy’s Company as an associate bookkeeper and retired after 43 years.
Church was her passion. She loved the worship, the fellowship and the music. As an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for more than 60 years, she enjoyed singing in the Gospel Chorus and attending Sunday school.
She was an avid reader. Daily she read the Holy Bible, different newspapers and a variety of books. She was a masterful storyteller. When telling stories she would hold your attention, her annunciation was clear and precise, and descriptions colorful and at times humorous
Her hobbies included the “Daily Soap Opera Party Line” with Daisy Bannister and Goldie Thomas and hosting “Taboo” game parties.
Sister Dorothy transitioned into Eternal Peace on Saturday, January 25th 2020 at the age of 89. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her three daughters, Donna Lester-Scantlebury (Eric) of Highland, NY; Janice Lester, White Plains, NY; and Cheryl Ann Perry (Kenneth) of White Plains, NY; four grandchildren, Ashley Camacho, Carissa and Evan Scantlebury and Janae Lester; one sister, Emma Macon, New Rochelle, NY, three brothers, Gerald Holman of Danville, KY; David Coleman of Yonkers, NY; Michael Mitchell, Bronx, NY and a host of other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Anna Bell and Benjamin Davis; husband, Walter Lester, Jr.; son, Walter Lester, lll; and siblings, William Mairs, Theodore Teel, Elvira Bryant, Beryl Gray and Dorothy Hampton.
Legacy of Love
A mother, a grandmother, a friend too,
This is the legacy we have from you,
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might,
A stronger person would be hard to find,
In your heart you were always kind,
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a mother, not just as a grandmother,
