Nina J. Speight, age 80, passed away on Saturday December 21, 2019 at New York Presbyterian -Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, NY. She was born March 9, 1939 to Samuel W. Hopkins and Annie M. (Collins) Hopkins in Bessemer, AL the third of seven children. She graduated Dunbar High School with honors in Bessemer, AL in 1957 and attended Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL where she majored in Mathematics. Inspired by her grandmother, Mrs. Nina Carter, she moved to White Plains to pursue a new life in 1959. She married Julius A. Speight in April of 1962. She worked and attended Tefft Business School before starting a career at Nationwide Insurance, NY Telephone Company, and retired after a 30-year tenure at AT&T in 2002. Nina was an avid follower of sports, politics, and displayed remarkable culinary skills which she loved to share with her family and friends. A gentle quiet spirit, with a gigantic heart, and a clever and quick-witted sense of humor, she is survived by her spouse Julius; her two daughters Wanda (Carl) Bridgers, and Erika Speight; three grandchildren, Chase, Cameron, Caitlin: and a sister Cynthia (Larry) Dowe and a host of extended family nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Funeral services are being arranged at Lee’s Funeral Home in White Plains, NY and her Homegoing Service will be held on January 5, 2020 at the Davenport & Harris Funeral Home in Birmingham, Alabama.
