Obituary for Helen H. Henton (Atkins)

Helen Atkins Henton was born in North Tarrytown, New York on August 29, 1923 to the late Cyril Atkins and Mary Ferguson Atkins. Helen was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Tarrytown, the church where her mother was a lifelong member and her grandparents were members. Helen attended Tarrytown Public Schools and graduated from Jamaica High School at the age of 17 after her family moved to Jamaica, New York.

After several years, Helen returned to Tarrytown working at Sonitrol, Technicon and Siemens. Having a love of learning, Helen attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, receiving a B.S. degree in business in 1988. She was later hired by Marymount to work in the admissions office, later becoming the Assistant to the Director of Admissions for the Weekend College, until her retirement.

Always challenging herself and looking for opportunities to learn new things, over the years Helen pursued many interests; she was a licensed beautician, a volunteer for the Tarrytown Ambulance Corps, EMT, ombudsman, a docent at various museums and a world-wide traveler. Helen had the goal of traveling to all seven continents. She wasn’t able to travel to all seven, but she did travel to Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and traveled extensively in North America. Her hobbies included reading, writing, traveling, visiting museums, and painting. Helen was also an active Tarrytown resident. She participated in events at the Senior Center and the Neighborhood House. She also attended writing classes and tai chi; walking to as many places as possible.

Helen and her former husband Moses Henton gave birth to two daughters, Esther Henton (deceased) and Lynne Henton Lanier. Her children loved her dearly. She was also a special sister, an awesome aunt, the greatest grandmother, a sweet sister-in-law and a true friend. In 2013, Helen moved to Connecticut to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law. The last three years of her life she became a resident at MeadowBrook Nursing Home in Granby, Ct. She received excellent care and services there along with loving attention from her family and family friends.

On November 5, 2019, at the age of 96, Helen transitioned from labor to reward at MeadowBrook with her daughter, Lynne and son-in-law, Joel, by her side. Helen was predeceased by her brother Leonard Atkins and his wife, Florence, her brother Kermit Atkins and his wife Charlotte, and her oldest daughter, Esther Henton. She leaves to cherish her memory - her daughter, Lynne Henton Lanier, son-in-law Joel Lanier, granddaughters Kristie and Sherrie Lanier, a niece, Deborah Atkins Stubbs, nephews, Lenny Atkins, Gregory Atkins, Daniel Stubbs, and Derrick Stubbs and a host of other family members and dear friends.
