Obituary for Emma Y. Williams

Emma Y. Williams, a resident of Midlothian, VA, departed from this life on January 8, 2019, at the age of 92.

Born on March 16, 1926 in Yonkers, NY, Emma graduated from Lincoln School for Nurses and then received a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Nursing Education from New York University in 1958. She later earned her Registered Nurse degree. Emma worked in the public health field in New York City for many years then became a school nurse in Lowville, NY. While raising her children, she went back to school and earned a Master’s in Education from the College of New Rochelle in 1978. She taught in the special education field for several years until her retirement.

As a resident of White Plains, NY for over 40 years, she was very involved in neighborhood activities, the public school PTA and teaching Sunday School at Bethel Baptist Church. She also was a faithful volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Along with her husband, Albert, his brother, Eugene Williams, and his wife, Lorraine, she was a founding partner of Dogwood Housing Limited Partnership in Charlottesville, VA. This family business provided quality housing for low income residents for 27 years and received special recognition from the Virginia Assembly in 2015.

Emma loved the Lord, loved people and always had positive things to say about (almost) everyone. She enjoyed helping others, being with her family and dancing; some of her best steps were seen at parties in the past two years. Hospitality was one of her many gifts and she was always ready to feed a visitor with her special ham sandwich, mouthwatering homemade apple pie or many other treats she always had available. She will be remembered as a sweet woman with a great smile and a meek and quiet spirit that spoke volumes to everyone she met. One of her common encouragements during hard times was, “this too shall pass”.

She enjoyed a beautiful marriage with her beloved husband of 62 years, Albert, who predeceased her on September 22, 2018. She leaves behind to cherish her memory a devoted daughter, Patricia Whitaker (Darnell); grateful grandchildren, Alana, Lauren, Timothy, and Whitney; son, Brian; sister, Ruth (Gene) Logan; niece, Dorothy (Charles) Terry; nephew Charles Hicks Jr and a host of extended family and friends. She was also loved by staff at Bickford Assisted Living while she resided there with Albert.
