Obituary for Beatrice Jones

BEATRICE Life’s Journey

Beatrice Jones–Alex was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. May 24, 1927 to the late Reverend Samuel M. Jones and Minnie Ziegler. She was married to the late Alfonso Alex. From this union they had one daughter the Reverend Patricia Dale Gillman. Beatrice early childhood days were in Knoxville, Tenn., and Jacksonville, Fla. After completing here education in Florida, she moved to White Plains, NY to join her other siblings.

Her early employment was that of a domestic worker throughout the Westchester area. She loved cooking and was hired out for catering to friends and several of her employers. She worked for Mr. Head, a Fashion Designer, of which her daughter profited from with designer clothes. Beatrice was also a Food Supervisor at “Saint Mary’s In The Field”. Some of her most cherished years working was for Marshall Cooke’s Florist in Hartsdale. She quickly became a part of the Cooke family to the point thinking and acting as though She was the owner. Her duties there included flowering plants; and later working for Mrs. Cook in the home. The Cooke family adores her especially their Son Joseph Cooke, reminiscing about her “Corn Bread & Pound Cakes.”

She loved music and her tambourine and was a gifted soloist. She was self- taught on the piano by going to her father’s church on many occasions as a child, playing the keyboard until she finally learned how to play. Her favorite song was, “Precious Memories.” Later in life Mrs. Jones- Alex had a second child a son, the late Stephen W. Jones.

As an adult, Beatrice loved traveling and would often travel with cousins and friends to the Islands & New Orleans festivals. She is a lifelong member of the WCO Organization..Beatrice dedicated her life to God, participating in many church functions. She’s was quite active in many church organizations; often traveling from New York to South Carolina to attend church conventions.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories her daughter, the Reverend Patricia Dale Gillman, Associate Minister at Mt. Hope AME Zion Church, two sisters, Mrs. Esther Carter, Mrs. Rebecca F. James, (Frank), daughter-in-law, Rose Jones, four grandchildren, Anthony, Keith, & Laneta Gillman and Stevaughn Jones, Two great granddaughters, Janiqua Infante & EllaRose Jones. One great grandson, Stevaughn Jr., & one great-great granddaughter, Nyomi Grace Gillman; and a host of Nieces, Nephews and friends.
