Obituary for Janice Lee Richardson

On January 3, 2018 The Lord called home our loved one, Janice Lee Richardson, after an intense battle with lung cancer. Janice was born on September 11, 1955 in Valhalla, NY to Milton Richardson and the late Luecelia Wade Richardson. She was a devoted daughter, caring sister, and a loving mother.

Janice was a resident of Greenburgh, NY and graduated from Woodlands High School’s Class of 1973, where she developed friendships that would last a lifetime. Janice went on to work several jobs until landing a position with the Westchester County Department of Social Services, where she worked as an Eligibility Examiner for 31 years before retiring in 2011. In that time, she helped countless families in need and made a difference in more people’s lives than she could ever imagine. Her coworkers grew to love her wittiness and diligence, which led to the establishment of many more meaningful friendships with “Richardson,” as she was affectionately called at the office.

Janice possessed many wonderful characteristics. She had an awesome sense of humor, and was known as a great storyteller to many. Keeping family and friends entertained with her many tales, whether it be something that happened at work or a short walk down the street, she was sure to make you shed a tear or two from laughter. She was also an avid reader; in between her own storytelling you could always find her head in a book.

Janice was an amazing mother to her only child, Ashia, whom she loved unconditionally. The two were inseparable and their bond was indescribable. Though they had a great mother-daughter relationship, the two also grew to be best friends over the years. Her siblings would describe her as reliable and trustworthy. She held family close to her heart and was a warm shoulder to lean on in times of need, always keeping their best interest in mind when giving advice.

Primarily, Janice took pride in taking care of her beloved father, Milton, after the passing of her mother in 2002. Whether he needed the help or not, she was never too far behind to pick up where he left off. They were two of a kind, head strong, outspoken, but nonetheless they loved each other dearly.

She leaves to cherish fond memories: her daughter, Ashia Richardson-Epps, her father, Milton “Bill” Richardson, as well as her siblings, Diana Jean Richardson and Milton Wade Richardson, known as “Richie” among friends and family. Her nieces and nephews would describe her as a kind, playful, and fun-loving aunt; she leaves behind Jamey, Roy, and Erik Epps, Deanna Richardson, Tyrese Richardson, and her great-nephews and niece LaDainian, J’son, Jayden, and Jayla Epps. Janice also leaves a slew of aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends to carry on her legacy.

In Loving Memory,
The Family

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?”
John 14:1-2
