Obituary for Susie M. Newton

Susie M. Newton, 86, of Greenburgh, NY returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 13, 2017. She was born to the late Willie Newton and Annie Watkins in Clarksville, Virginia on May 26, 1930.

She graduated from West End High School in Chase City, Virginia and years later attended Westchester Business Institute in NY. Susie was married to the late James E. Downey of Mecklenburg County, Virginia and from that union had two children, Dianna and James. They later divorced.

Susie was a dedicated, hard worker. After 28 years of working at Pepsi Bottling Company in Somers, NY, Susie retired in 1996. During her retirement, Susie worked part time as a receptionist at the Theodore D. Young Community Center in Greenburgh until 2010 and expanded those in the community that call her Nana, Aunt Sue, and Miss Susie. Her wisdom will be forever cherished.

She was a devoted member of Union Baptist Church for over 50 years where she was actively involved in the Senior Usher Board, multiple choirs, and the Virginia Club. Susie was known for her feisty, yet strong and loving spirit. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

Susie is survived by her daughter, Dianna Florance (Jimmy); sisters, Beatrice Newton and Doris Mai Thomas (Leon) and brothers, George Newton (Gertrude) and Alvin Newton. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Duane Downey (Alicia), Darryl Downey (Latoya), Jonas Florance (Rheiya), Sonya Williams (John), and Dawn Downey; ten great-grandchildren, Tabitha Jackson, Antwon Lanes, Jr., Craig Saunders, Malcom Downey, Da’Sean Downey, Jordyn Florance, Deion Downey, Jaya Williams, Krystal Downey, and Jayson Williams; four great great-grandchildren, Payton, Avianna, Avery, and Bryce, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her son, James ‘Tommy’ Downey; brothers, Thomas, Lin, Clifton, and Herman Newton, and sister, Clara Gray.
