Obituary for Jerry D. Thompson

Jerry D. Thompson also known as “J.D” was the youngest of ten siblings born to Alfred Thompson and Lugenia Gibbons Thompson of Louisville, Georgia. He departed this life on Tuesday, April 14, 2015.

He graduated from Wadley High School in 1947 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Korean War where he rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer and received an honorable discharge. Upon leaving the Navy he relocated to White Plains, NY. In later years, he reconnected with his fellow service men and was a charter member of the USS Arnold J Isbell DD869 reunion group.

After obtaining a certificate of carpentry from the Manhattan Trade Center, he established and maintained a successful business for over 50 years; specializing in carpentry and custom cabinet making. Jerry was known for his workmanship and creative talent which he shared with the church and local community.

He met and married Irene A. McCants on September 5, 1959. This union was blessed with two children Darryl and Kim. He has three grandchildren whom he loved and adored.

Jerry joined Bethel Baptist Church on February 14, 1960 where he remained a member until his death. He was also a lifetime member of the NAACP.

Jerry was the strong silent type and when engaged in conversation he was always thoughtful when expressing his views.

He will be remembered for his quiet demeanor and gentle spirit.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Irene, children, Darryl Thompson (Virginia) and Kim Thompson Fields (Nathaniel); grandchildren Jordyn Fields, Nathaniel Fields, and Jared Thompson, and three God children Cheryl McCants-Daughtrey, Ena Holmes, and Dana Thompson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Wake will be Sunday, April 19th, 7-9pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 1 Fisher Ct., White Plains, NY 10601. Final viewing Monday 11:30am, immediately followed by Funeral at 12 Noon at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY
