Obituary for Gerald Welch

Gerald Oscar Darlington Welch was born on July 30, 1922 in the parish of St. James, Barbados West Indies. He was the first born child of Verona née Odle and Ethelbert Welch. Gerald grew up the oldest child in a family of nine siblings, including six boys and three girls; Glencena, Hazel, Oswald, Clotel, Vernal, Hallum, Clement and Cardinal.

Upon completion of his basic education at Saint Albans Boys School, Weston St. James, Gerald apprenticed in stone masonry and soon became quite skilled at this craft. But with work opportunities few and far between, Gerald like many young men of his generation longed for the opportunity to immigrate to the USA. He got that first opportunity in 1945 when he arrived in Florida as a migrant farm worker. From this experience Gerald always saw the USA as the land of opportunity. Upon returning to Barbados Gerald was determined that if the opportunity ever came again he would do all he could to stay in this land of plenty. As fortune would have it he got another opportunity the following year 1946 and returned to Florida, once again as a migrant farm worker but this time his sights were set on the cities up North. Towards the end of 1946 Gerald arrived in New York and lived with the family of his Uncle Lynch. Gerald joined the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 NY in July 1949. He worked hard and took pride in the buildings he helped build; later in life he would often point out various buildings that he had worked on to his wife and children on trips into the city. Perhaps his most well-known construction job was New York’s World Trade Center, Twin Towers.

Gerald married Enid Hobbs on November 13, 1949; the couple initially lived with her family in Harlem, New York until they bought an apartment building and moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1958. Gerald and Enid had five children; Gerald Jr. (G.G), Sonya, David, Jocelynne and Adrienne, a sixth child, Gerald's daughter Louise joined the family in 1968. In November 1971 Gerald moved his family to a new home he had built in Greenburgh, NY. A devoted husband and father, Gerald endeavored tirelessly to complete this house for his family by working on it in the evenings after he completed a full day of work and on the weekends.

A serious car accident in 1974 left Gerald unable to meet the strenuous demands of a brick mason; so to support his family he expanded his endeavor in the field of real estate by purchasing a second apartment building in Brooklyn. His knowledge of construction was a perfect fit with his new role of full-time landlord. Gerald took great pride in his buildings and often handled much of the work needed to upkeep and improve the quality and safety of them.

Gerald was an energetic and loving man although his deep booming voice and at times abrupt way of speaking sometimes left him misunderstood. Gerald was a family man; nothing gave him more pride and satisfaction than the knowledge that his family, both here in the US and in Barbados, was well provided for. He was happiest when his family and especially his children and grandchildren were around. Gerald loved to laugh and could often be heard throughout the house laughing and enjoying a good natured "debate" with his youngest brother Cardie.

Gerald also loved to cook and enjoyed preparing dishes as he remembered them from his childhood for his family.

Gerald joined his beloved wife, Enid and his first born son, GG, on February 3, 2015; he was 92. Gerald is survived by his children Louise Taitt, Sonya Larrieux, David Welch, Jocelynne Ross and Adrienne Welch as well as grandchildren: Eric Larrieux, Alex Larrieux, Devin Welch and Alexis Ross. His siblings; Oswald Welch, Vernal Welch, Hallum Welch, Cardinal Welch, Clotel Sargeant, a sister-in-law Eunice Hobbs and myriad nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Wake will be on Wed. Feb. 11th from 4-6pm at Lee’s Funeral Home, 160 Fisher Av., White Plains, NY. Then Thurs. Feb. 12th at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 204 West 134th St., New York, NY there will be a Final Viewing at 10:30am, followed by Requiem Mass at 11:00am.
