Obituary for James D. Evans

James D. Evans of White Plains, NY departed this life on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Schnurmacher Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. Born and raised in White Plains, James attended the city public schools and graduated from White Plains High School in 1949. After graduating James enlisted in the United States Army. Trained as a paratrooper, he served his country from 1950-1954, completing his tour of duty with an honorable discharge.

While James was in the Army he was able to explore and grow his love and knowledge of art, subsequently becoming the Troops Art Director. After his discharge from the Army he enrolled in the Phoenix School of Art in New York City, graduating Magna Cum Laude. With his degree he soon found employment with several advertising agencies, advancing his career from a draftsman to an Art Director. After working for many years for corporations and advertising agencies, James established his own business Creative Enterprises, as a successful graphic design firm which he continued to direct and manage until he became ill. Through his design firm, James frequently donated his time and artistic talents to help multiple church, civic and community-service organizations with art work and producing promotional materials.

James was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church in 1945 under the Pastorate of Rev. Thomas H. Slater. After joining Bethel, James became active in the Senior Choir, attended Bible Study regularly and became the Secretary of the Bible Study under Deacon George Jenkins. James loved Bethel Baptist Church. He designed the art work, “ ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM,” which is displayed in the Church’s main Sanctuary. He also designed the Plaque and the art work displayed in the Christine Mitchell Fellowship Hall.

James was a dedicated and active member of the Masonic Order. Over many years, he provided service to the community by working and holding leadership positions in the Bright Hope Lodge #62 F&AM (PH); King David Consistory #98 and Elejmal Temple #185, A.E.A.O.N.M.S.

James leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 55 years Cornelia Evans of White Plains, NY; a nephew Irving D. Bell (Karen); goddaughter, Shelly Gaines; along with her sisters and brothers; and a host of friends.

Pre-deceased by his parents, Charles & Elizabeth Evans, one brother, Charles & one sister Elizabeth.
