Obituary for Elizabeth "Lizzie" Armstrong

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Armstrong, a long-time resident of White Plains, NY died on February 9, 2014, at the age of 86.

Born on July 11, 1927 in Frogmore, St. Helena’s Island, South Carolina to the late George Walter Browne, Sr. and Redell Ladson, Lizzie was the seventh of eight children. Educated at the Penn School, she graduated with the Class of 1945.

In her early 20’s, Lizzie moved to New York to live with her sister, Ernestine “Carol” McArthur, where she met John H. Armstrong. Lizzie and John moved to White Plains in 1953 where they raised 5 children and opened their home to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband in 1977, Lizzie, a loving and dedicated homemaker, used her creative talents to start a catering business with her sister Carol. Her love of cooking led her to the Brass Racquet Club and Restaurant where she worked as a cook.

Lizzie is survived by her brother, George Walter Browne, Jr., her five children: Kenia Armstrong, Beverly Christian, Karen Armstrong, Karla (Paul) Packer, Brian Armstrong, three grandchildren: Samantha Christian, Connor & David Packer, and her nieces: Marsha (nee McArthur) Gilman, Marilyn (nee McArthur) Jackman, and the late Sheila McArthur to whom she was a second mother, and extended her love and care to so many.
