Obituary for Nancy LaNetta Fowlkes (Pinkard)

Nancy LaNetta  Fowlkes (Pinkard)
Nancy L.P. Fowlkes, of White Plains, NY died November 23, 2013.

She was born on August 26, 1924 to Amos M. and Nettie B. Pinkard. Nancy married Vester G. Fowlkes in 1955. From that union, one child, Wendy D. Fowlkes was born. Vester predeceased her in 1965.

Nancy grew up in Mt. Vernon, NY and graduated from AB Davis HS. She received a BA from Bennett College, MA from Syracuse University, MSW from Smith College, and an MPA from Pace University.

Nancy was very active in a number of organizations including the White Plains Community Chest, YWCA, Interfaith Council, NAACP, Advisory Board at Eastview JR./HS., the Regency Bridge Club, Westchester County Urban League, Mt. Vernon Concert Group, Board of Directors of the Bethel Methodist Home, Scarritt-Bennett Center in TN and the Gum Moon Residence in CA. Nancy was also a member of the NASW, Academy of Certified Social Workers, Jack and Jill of America, the NANBPWC, and her beloved Zeta Nu Omega Chapter of AKA Inc.

In the United Methodist Church she has served on the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the UM Women, Administrative Methodist Board, NY Conference Program Division, Episcopal Residence Committee, District Council on Ministries, Trustee Board, Superintendent’s Committee, Board of Ordained Ministry, Mission Leadership and Women’s Division. At her beloved Trinity UM Church, she chaired the 100th Anniversary and Finance Committee, was a Lay Speaker, President/member of the UM Women, Trustee, and Sunday School Teacher.

After college she worked as an Assistant Editor for the VA State Teacher’s Association and Director of Publicity at Bennett College. Upon returning to NY she worked at the Westchester County Department of Social Services serving as a social caseworker and then as Supervisor of Adoption Services and Foster Care.

She leaves behind to celebrate her life a daughter, Wendy D. Fowlkes, granddaughter, Ebony J. Fowlkes, two nephews, Earl Ford and Walter Handy, and five grand nephews, Christopher, Jeffrey, and Mark Ford, Erik and Darryl Handy, and a host of family and friends.
