Obituary for Leroi Douglas "Junie" Smalls

Leroi Douglas “Junie” Smalls was born in White Plains, New York on July 7, 1947 to the late Deacon Leroy Smalls and Reverend Thelma Smalls. He was educated by the White Plains and Greenburgh School Systems. During his adolescence, he became an avid sportsman; enjoying football and track & field. As a graduate of Woodlands High School, he was awarded a 4-year athletic scholarship to Virginia State University for his outstanding football capabilities (position, running back).

At a young age, Junie’s mother taught him the importance of service to others and the value of a personal relationship with Christ. As a result, he served as a Junior Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Lester Cousin. In his later years, he joined the membership of Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church of Mt. Vernon, NY under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Stephen W. Pogue. His desire to help others led to his career as a social worker for the New York State Department of Social Services. In his leisure time, Junie used his creative skills to design and make leather handbags. His entrepreneurial spirit and personable skills helped him sell those handbags in addition to a number of other accessories.

Douglas leaves to cherish his memory his son Brandon Smalls; his brother Reverend Roger L. Smalls; his sister Denise Floyd; his sister-in-law Joan L. Smalls; his brothers-in-law Robert Burnett and Gerald Floyd; his nephews Christopher Smalls and Glover Smalls; his nieces Chanté Smalls and Gina Wade, and a host of cousins, loved ones and friends.
