Mr. Johnnie Myers was born to the late Lorenzo Fields and Ella Myers on August 26, 1920 in Sheldon, South Carolina. He was later adopted and raised by his mother’s cousins, the Hipp family. During the calmness of Friday afternoon, May 5, 2017 all that was mortal of our beloved family patriarch took its flight into immortality.

He attended schools in Sheldon, S.C. and was actively involved in Canaan Baptist Church at an early age. In his early years, he worked in Savannah, Georgia where he met the love of his life, Sadie Mae Brown. They were joined in holy matrimony on March 15, 1941 in Savannah, GA. As a young couple, they came to White Plains, New York in 1942 seeking employment and personal growth. The siblings from this union are Mary Frances and Delores.

In keeping with their Christian upbringing, they both joined Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Thomas H. Slater;. Mr. Myers was very active on the Senior Usher Board until his health began to fail. He was committed to the Junior Usher Board as a driver for their various activities and annual days.

Mr. Myers had a strong work ethic. At an early age, he was an apprentice under Cunning Green, who taught him the art of pressing in Yemassee, South Carolina. Once he arrived in New York, he was determined to provide for his family by gaining employment in this field. After honing his craft and becoming self-sufficient, he was sought out by several cleaning establishments as a professional presser. He was employed by Miller’s Cleaners, Silverman’s Cleaners, and then finally Frederick’s Cleaners.

He was known on Minerva Place for his community garden from which he shared his garden produce with his neighbors. He was an advocate for the young men in the neighborhood as he imparted his wisdom, shared stories, life lessons, and even “ Johnnie Myers’ special quotes and isms”. i.e. “always carry a pocket”. Mr. Myers became a member of Bright Hope Lodge #62, F & AM Prince Hall Affiliation and inspired other young men in that same direction.

After several years of being a widower, Mr. Myers married Mary Kay Primus on March 2, 1991. She predeceased him on July 20, 2015.

Those left to cherish his memories, mourn his passing, and celebrate his life: daughters; MaryFrances (Wayne) Perkins; Delores Myers-Wiley; grandchildren- Sean John Myers, Tristan Shalene Wiley; Jonathan Perkins; Joslyn (Charles) Wynn; Janeen (Jason) Thomas; Great grand children - Shalene Olivia Myers; Olivia Savannah Wynn; Great great grandchild- Demari Barrett; sisters - Doretha Myers; Mamie Gains; 4 sisters-in-law, 3 brothers-in-law, 7 step children, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close family friends.
