Obituary for Eddie W. Garnett

Eddie W. Garnett
Eddie W. Garnett was born on April 23, 1933 in Lincolnton, Georgia to the late Will Garnett and Leola (Kennedy) Garnett.

Eddie attended public school in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as an Army Sergeant. After his discharge he moved to White Plains, New York where he found employment at the General Motors Plant in No. Tarrytown, New York.

Eddie’s love of cars followed him outside of his work at General Motors. He loved working on cars, with the intent of making them run faster. He enjoyed drag racing. He won multiple trophies on various drag strips. He was also known to have raced on a few local streets and parkways, earning himself “extra” money. Eddie’s name on the drag racing circuit was “Big Ed”.

After his drag racing career was over he and his lovely wife Emily, began to follow NASCAR Racing traveling to Delaware, PA, South Carolina and Florida. His favorite race quickly became the Daytona 500 in Daytona, FL. Eddie and Emily attended the Daytona 500 every year until it became too difficult for him to travel long distances.

Eddie was a very loving and kind person, a family oriented man who cared deeply. He especially enjoyed spending time with a host of nieces and nephews, who fondly called him Uncle “DD”. He had the joy and pleasure of being a God Father to; Michelle Sturdivant, Nicole Glimp and Navar Elam.

Later in life, Eddie enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts and the children of Bethel Baptist Church located in White Plains, NY. He was also an active member of the Men’s Ministry.

Eddie will fondly be remembered for his gift of giving and caring for others.

Eddie is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Emily (Sweat) Garnett; three sisters, Dorothy Washington, Reaver Glaze and Mary Glimp all of Reading, PA; two brothers, John Garnett of Reading, PA, and Nathan Hogan of Elmsford, NY. He was preceded in death by four sisters; Ruby Turman, Ann Danner, Johnnie Crawl, and Helen Snead, and three brothers, Roy, John and Frank.

The family would like to acknowledge the many expressions of kindness and love extended to them during this time of bereavement.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Men’s Ministry and or the Boy Scouts of Bethel Baptist Church, in memory of Eddie Garnett, would be prayerfully appreciated.

The Entire Staff of Lee's Funeral Home, LLC respects that the Garnett Family entrusted the care of their loved one to us, and that they value the level of service & attention our funeral home provides.
