The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Guy Mathews can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

"To Be A Man"

"Help me in all life’s games to play

So those with whom I’m matched might say,

'There’s a Man who to the core

Is clean and fair, and furthermore

It makes no difference win or lose

He’s the kind of a friend that one would choose.'

Let me victory to attain

If by my strength and skill I can

I’ll heed the rules and play my best

And whether I fail or pass the test

Let me not myself disgrace

I’ll be a Man in either case.

I do not want to steal the show,

But rather that the team would know

That I am with them every minute

In the game to help them win it.

I want to do just all I can

To help myself – to be a Man.

I want opponents at their peak

If full benefits I would seek.

For I know that satisfaction

Is in proportion to the action,

That it takes from mind and muscle

In a tense and even tussle.

Should I win I will not boast

But to them all I’d give a toast

'Here’s to my teammates and opponents

Who helped me in these passing moments

To make my life a greater pleasure

By closer to a Man to measure.'

If I should lose I’ll not complain

I’ll do the thing I know is sane,

Congratulate the team which won

And then as soon as that is done

I’ll vow next time to do e’en more

To be a Man and help my score."
