Obituary for Daphne Ilene Alleyne

Daphne Ilene Alleyne was born in Barbados, West Indies on January 30, 1915. After completing her basic education, Daphne was trained as a dressmaker, a profession which she worked in for several years. She first visited New York in 1956 where she eventually took up permanent residence in Brooklyn, New York. While in New York she received training in food preparation and food handling at New York Community College. She worked as a supervisor at the Fort Greene Senior Citizen in Brooklyn where she trained several employees in the art of cooking and food handling. She was a perfectionist in cooking. Anyone who knew her would vouch for the tasty and rich dishes she would prepare. She wanted people to “eat to their hearts delight.” She retired in 1988 at the age of 73, but continued to prepare the rich dishes she so loved at home for others to partake of.

She became ill at the age of 83 and had a triple bypass. After recuperating, Daphne continued to do the one thing she enjoyed most – cook rich food for herself and others. She was a very generous lady who was always helping someone, whether it be family, friends and even strangers. After retirement she would visit Nassau, Bahamas and Barbados spending 6 months to a year at a time to help her elderly aunts when they were ill.

Daphne was a devout Christian who lived her life with contentment. Her faith in God was extremely strong. In Barbados she was a worshipper at St. Barnabas Anglican Church. In Brooklyn, NY, she was a member of Bethany Methodist Church. After losing a leg as a result of complications from diabetes, she spent the last seven years of her life as a resident at the Schnurmacher Nursing Home in White Plains, NY. She made her earthly transition on August 7, 2014.

She leaves to mourn, her son Victor, daughter- in- law Barbara, grandson Eric, her brother Alwyn in Trinidad, the Brennan family in Nassau, Bahamas, Colin Todd and family, Geoffrey Alleyne and family in Montreal, the Gerard family and Fernando Yard and many other relatives and friends in Barbados, Canada and England. She will be dearly missed.
