Deaconess Janice Beatty Hudson
a.k.a. “Mama Jan”
Obituary
Janice Beatty Hudson was born November 22, 1936 in Charlotte, North Carolina where she was raised and received her formal education. With the love and inspiration of her two loving parents, Lady Frances (Beatty) Jordan and Dr. Edgar Jordan, the encouragement to achieve high levels of education for success in career and life was a foundational principal within their home. Because Dr. Jordan was a pastor in the United Methodist Church, it meant his pastoral assignments would relocate the family from time to time to new congregations, which included Allentown, Pennsylvania and White Plains, New York. Dr. Jordan would serve as pastor at the Trinity United Methodist Church in White Plains, where Mama Jan’s spiritual roots would be planted, watered and nurtured.
Mama Jan would establish her teaching career by receiving her degree at Central State University in North Carolina. She taught in the area of Special Education in Westchester County for over twenty years and was recognized and branded as a nurturer and inspiration. Mama Jan united with the Bethel Baptist Church on October 27, 1974 and continued the good work begun at Trinity within the many ministries at Bethel.
She was very active in ministry, and was an original member of the Education Ministry, served as a Deaconess and Missionary, served as Youth Director, and was a member of the Daughters of Bethel. In addition, she was involved in several community outreach ministries in Westchester County, and held the following offices: President of Church Women United, Recording Secretary of Working Churches, and was an active member of Willing Workers. In addition, Mama Jan was inducted into the Westchester Seniors Hall of Fame in 2012 and was also honored by the Church Women United.
On July 17, 1982, Mama Jan married Deacon Malcolm M. Hudson Sr. and they had 25 years of love, friendship and laughter. All who had the opportunity to be around them knew they had a special and unique relationship not often seen or shared today. On February 21, 2008, she shared these final words with him, as he lay on his transition bed facing the morning sun. “It’s okay Mac, you can turn and go to the Son.”
On Thursday July 17th around 12 noon, Mama Jan joined her husband as she turned to the Son and transitioned into eternity.
Mama Jan leaves to celebrate her legacy: Sons/Daughters-in-law --- Rev. Malcolm M. Hudson Jr. & Eunice Hudson (New Rochelle, N.Y.); Dr. Reginald L. Hudson & Lady Shelly Hudson (Bedford Hills, N.Y.); Sister - Delcina Gittens (Charlotte, NC); Brother-in-law - Deacon Richard Greene, (Richmond, Va); Cousins - James Goodman (her Heart), Naomi Maharas, Grazella McCoy, (8) Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, and a host of Godchildren and dear friends.
To God be the Glory!
